The rulers of the small regional state of Teng 滕, located in today's Tengzhou 滕州, Shandong, were descendants Cuo Shu Xiu 錯叔繡, a son of King Wen 周文王 of the Zhou dynasty 周 (11th cent.-221 BCE). There is virtually nothing known about the history of this regional state, except a list of its rulers. They bore the royal family name Ji 姬. The most famous regional ruler of Teng was Duke Wen 滕文公 II (r. 324-316 BCE), at whose court the philosopher Mengzi 孟子 (385-304 or 372-289 BCE) stayed for some time. His name is also used for a chapter title of the book Mengzi.
In the first half of the 5th century BCE, Teng was conquered by the state of Yue 越.
