Wang Xuanmo 王玄謨 (388-468), courtesy name Yande 彥德, was a general of the Liu-Song dynasty, one of the Southern Dynasties.
He hailed from Qixian 祁縣 in the commandery of Taiyuan 太原. Xie Hui 謝晦 (390-426) recommended him, was he was appointed as Adjutant of the Moving Army of the Southern Barbarians (nanman xing canjun 南蠻行參軍) and governor (taishou 太守) of the commandery of Wuning 武寧. During the reign of Emperor Wen 文皇帝 (r. 424-453), he was made Aide of the Defence Guard (zhenjun zhongbing canjun 鎮軍中兵參軍) of Liu Yixin 義欣, the Prince of Changsha 長沙,, and then governor of Ruyin 汝陰, later of Pengcheng 彭城.
In 450, when the Liu-Song dynasty launched a large-scale campaign against the Northern Wei empire 北魏 (386-534), he was made General Pacifying the North (ningshuo jiangjun 寧朔將軍) and special commissioner (jiedu 節度) of Xiao Bin 蕭斌 (d. 453), Bulwark-of-the State General (fuguo jiangjun 輔國將軍). Wang commanded the siege of Huatai 滑臺 (today's Huaxian 滑縣, Henan). However, the discipline of his troops was lax. They killed and plundered at will, greatly losing the support of the people. He also stubbornly rejected advice, causing much resentment among his officers and soldiers. When Emperor Taiwu 北魏太武帝 (r. 423-451) of the Wei led a large army to for relief, he was defeated and fled under the cover of night, resulting in his dismissal.
Wang was later reinstated but faced repeated promotions and demotions. He war regional inspector (cishi 刺史) of the province of Jizhou 冀州, commander in Emperor Xiaowu's 宋孝武皇帝 (r. 453-464) campaign against the patricide and usurper Liu Shao 劉劭 (424-453), and commanded, together with Liu Yuanjing 柳元景 (406-465), the campaign against the rebellious Liu Yixuan 劉義宣 (415-454), Prince of Nanjun 南郡; he was furthermore regional inspector of Yuzhou 豫州, and then of Yongzhou 雍州. During the reign of Emperor Ming 宋明帝 (r. 465-472), he held the posts of General of Chariots and Cavalry (cheji jiangjun 車騎將軍) and regional inspector of Nanyuzhou 南豫州, with the additional title of Commander-in-Chief (dudu 都督). He died while in office.
