The House of Luan 欒

The house of Luan 欒 was a noble family in the state of Jin 晉 during the Spring and Autumn period 春秋 (770-5th cent. BCE). Its ancestor was Luan Bin 欒賓, posthumous title Luan Shu Bin Fu 欒叔賓父, a grandson of Marquis Jing of Jin 晉靖侯 (r. 859-841). His actual family name was therefore Ji 姬, while Luan (modern Luancheng 欒城, Hebei) was the name of the territory and was later used as a kinsname (shi 氏).

There was another noble family called Luan in the state of Qi 齊 . Its ancestor was Prince Jian 公子堅, a son of Duke Hui 齊惠公 (r. 608-599). His courtesy name was Ziluan 子欒, of which the second character became the kinsname of the branch, while the actual family name of the ducal house of Qi was Jiang 姜.
