Ran Geng 冉耕 (born 544 BCE), courtesy name Boniu 伯牛, was one of the ten wise disciples of Confucius (Kong men shi zhe 孔門十哲). He was admired by Confucius for his kind conduct. When he died from an evil disease, Confucius was grief-stricken. When he was on his sickbed, the Master took hold of his hand through the window and said: "It is killing him. It is the appointment of Heaven, alas! That such a man should have such a sickness!"
