The following map gives an overview of the location of different neolithic (stone age) cultures of China. The chronological dimension is not taken into consideration.
The most important were the Longshan Culture 龍山 that flourished between 3000 and 2000 BCE in the middle and lower Yellow River plain, and especially in western Shandong. The polities of the Longshan culture were the forerunners of the most ancient Chinese states of the Xia 夏 (17th-15th cent. BCE) and the Shang 商 (17th-11th cent. BCE) periods. Somewhat more westwards, the Yangshao Culture 仰韶 had produced settlements in the regions of the modern provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi. In the lower Yangtze region, the Majiabang 馬家浜 and Liangzhu 良渚 cultures brought to light a very different culture than that from the Yellow River plain.
