There are two books called Xibeiyu ji 西北域記 "Report from the northwestern region", one written by Xie Jishi 謝濟世 (1689-1755), courtesy name Shilin 石霖, style Meizhuang 梅莊, and one by an anonymous author.

Xie's book was written according to his memories of the time when he was banished to Ili in 1726. He lived for ten years in this border town. His books included 55 small chapters and an appendix called Ganziji 戆子記. The book is very interesting for the study of the culture of the native tribes in the northwest. It is to be found in the series Huangchao fanshu yudi congshu 皇朝藩屬輿地叢書.

The anonymous book called Xibeiyu ji dates from the mid-17th century. The short text centers around the cities of Guihua 歸化城 (modern Hohhot 呼和浩特) in Inner Mongolia. It concisely describes the history and customs of the peoples living there and features of topography. It is to be found in the series Congshu jicheng chubian 叢書集成初編 and Longwei bishu 龍威祕書.
