Quanmingci 全明詞

Quanmingci 全明詞 is a collection of lyric-metre-style poems (ci 詞) from the Ming period 明 (1368-1644). It was compiled by Rao Zongyi 饒宗頤 and Zhang Zhang 張璋.

The compilers took Zhao Zunyue's Xiyintang congshu 惜陰堂叢書 as a model. This small series, initially published in 1924 and 1934, was republished by Rao in 1992 under the title Mingci huikan 明詞彙刊. It includes the anthologies Shiyu tupu 詩餘圖譜 by Wan Weitan 萬惟檀, Xia Neishi ci 夏內史詞 by Xia Wanchun 夏完淳, Fanshengxiang 返生香 by Ye Xiaoluan 葉小鸞, Gaiyuan shiyu 溉園詩餘 by Wan Shihua 萬時華, and Pingxige changduan ju 憑西閣長短句 by Lu Hongdu 陸宏度.

In the Quanmingci, Rao and Zhang arranged the poems by author, but not according to social status, as often found in traditional collections; instead, they placed them strictly chronologically.

A brief biography is included for each person. The collection comprises around 20,000 works by 1,396 individuals. Poems from those who lived during the transitional period between the Ming and Qing 清 (1644-1911) periods, and who saw themselves as subjects of the now vanished Ming, are also incorporated. Their works are also featured in the collection Quanqingci 全清詞. The collection contains an index. Additionally, the editors corrected inaccuracies regarding the lyric pattern (cipai 詞牌) where it was previously misrepresented.

The collection was published in 2004, in six volumes, by the Zhonghua Shuju 中華書局.

A supplement titled Quanmingci bubian 全明詞補編, compiled in two volumes by Zhou Mingchu 周明初, was published in 2007 by Zhejiang Daxue Press 浙江大學出版社. It incorporates poems from approximately 600 additional authors, including works not found in the original Quanmingci, adding over 5,000 new poems. Zhou also corrected some inaccuracies in the biographies contained in the Quanmingci. Over time, more lists of supplementary poems were published, some of them including full texts.
