Taiping yuefu 太平樂府

Taiping yuefu 太平樂府, full title Chaoye xinsheng taiping yuefu 朝野新聲太平樂府, is an anthology of aria-style poems (sanqu 散曲) compiled by Yang Chaoying 楊朝英 during the Yuan period. Yang also wrote a much smaller anthology, Yangchun baixue 陽春白雪. Both collections are knowns as "the two anthologies of Master Yang" (Yangshi er xuan 楊氏二選).

The collection of 9 juan length is divided into two parts, the first of which includes "single stanzas" (xiaoling 小令), and the second one "suites" (taoshu 套數). Apart from anonymous pieces, the collection includes poems of 85 (actually just 81) authors, with 1,062 xiaoling, and 141 taoshu. Quite a few of these pieces are not included in earlier collections, for example, poems of Zhang Yanghao 張養浩 (1270-1329), Qiao Ji 喬吉 (1280-1345), Zhong Jixian 鐘繼先, Sui Jingchen 睢景臣 (c. 1264-c. 1330) or Zhu Deqing 周德清 (1277-1365). Yang's collection is very reliable and thus an important source for Yuan-period poems.

There is an annotated edition by Lu Qian 盧前, published in 1955 by the Wenxue Guji Kanxingshe 文學古籍刊行社, and one by Sui Shusen 隋樹森, published in 1958 by the Zhonghua Shuju Press 中華書局.

All editions include a treatise on contemporary sound and pronunciation, Zhongzhou yuefu yinyun leibian 中州樂府音韻類編 (also called Beiqiong yunlei 北腔韻類) by Zhuo Congzhi 卓從之.
