Yangshiqianqibaiershijiuhezhai congshu 仰視千七百二十九鶴齋叢書 "Collectaneum of the Studio Admiring One Thousand Seven Hundred and Twenty-Nine Cranes"

The Yangshiqianqibaiershijiuhezhai congshu 仰視千七百二十九鶴齋叢書 "Collectaneum of the Studio Admiring One Thousand Seven Hundred and Twenty-Nine Cranes" is a collectaneum compiled by the late Qing period 清 (1644-1911) scholar Zhao Zhiqian 趙之謙 (1829-1884). It includes 40 books with a total length of 81 juan "scrolls". Zhao Zhiqian, courtesy name Zhao Yifu 趙益甫 or Zhao Huishu 趙撝叔, came from Guiji 會稽 (modern Shaoxing 紹興, Zhejiang) and never served in a state office. In the early Guangxu reign 光緒 (1875-1908) he was able to purchase lare parts of the dissolved Mingyeshanfang Library 鳴野山房 with the help of his friend Yang Qizhi 楊器之. Because of war and turmoils, he lost the largest part of this private library again and was only able to recover part of it when he visited Beijing to take parts in the metropolitan examination. In 1878 he finished the collectaneum and published it. It includes a lot of rare books as wellas some of Zhao's own writings. Some books are contemporary records, as the Yingjili Guangdong rucheng ji 英吉利廣東入城記, a report of the First Opium War. The title of the collectaneum goes back to a dream of Zhao, where he saw a large number of cranes flying in the air, while their shadows transformed into smaller and less prestigious birds or even insects, expressing that high hopes would result in vain dreams. In the end, he gave up participating in the state examination. The collectaneum is also important because Zhao Zhiqian has added a critical comment for each book. The print has been made in a high quality. The original collectaneum is divided into six sections (ji 集), but there are also editions in which the books are arranged in four sections. It was printed in 1880. There is a facsimile from 1929 published by the Morun Studio 墨潤堂 in Shaoxing.
