Shanju xinyu 山居新語, occasionally called Shanju xinhua 山居新話 "New words from a mountain dweller" is a collection of stories from the Yuan period 元 (1279-1368) written by Yang Yu 楊瑀 (1285-1361), courtesy name Yuancheng 元誠,from Hangzhou 杭州. During the Tianli reign-period 天曆 (1328-1329), he was promoted to registrar (dianji 典簿) of the Zhongrui Office 中瑞司. Later, he rose to the rank of Grand Master for Palace Attendance (zhongfeng dafu 中奉大夫), serving as Pacification Commissioner (xuanweishi 宣慰使) of the circuit of Zhedong 浙東道 and Commander-in-Chief (du yuanshuai 都元帥).
In his afterword to the four-juan-long book, the author states that the work was created after he retired to the mountains, hence the title. The content is quite comprehensive, covering topics such as imperial institutions and regulations, social customs and practices, the words and deeds of notable officials, as well as descriptions of natural landscapes. The accounts are presented in an organised manner rather than being confusing, and some of the historical materials it records are valuable for scholarly research.
