Shuhuaji 書畫記

Shuhuaji 書畫記 is a book on painting and calligraphy written during the high Qing period by Wu Qizhen 吳其貞 (1609-1678), courtesy name Gongyi 公一, from Huizhou 徽州, Anhui. Wu was a professional trader of artworks and antiques and was therefore experienced in assessing the quality of paintings.

His book of 6 juan length records and describes not only paintings and calligraphies from the Ming 明 (1368-1644) and the early Qing period which Wu had personally admired, but also more than 1,200 older artworks that span his collection. Wu gives assessments on the artistic quality, the format and shape, the type of paper or silk, imprints, dedications, and dating (kuan 款), and the genuineness of the pieces. Because the book also describes an erotic painting from the Tang period 唐 (618-907), Chunxiao mixi tu 春宵秘戲圖 "Secret plays in a spring night", it was not included in the imperial series Siku quanshu 四庫全書.

A modern edition of the book was published in 1963 by the Shanghai Art Press 上海美術出版社.
