Qingjialu 清嘉錄

Qingjialu 清嘉錄 "Records of the pure and admirable [land]" is a "brush-notes"-style work (biji 筆記) written during the late Qing period 清 (1644-1911) by Gu Lu 顧祿 (1793-1843), courtesy name Tieqing 鐵卿, style Chamo Shanren 茶磨山人, a native of Suzhou 蘇州, Jiangsu. He also wrote the collection Tongqiao yizhao lu 桐橋倚棹錄. The book's title derives from a phrase by Lu Shiheng 陸士衡 (Lu Ji 陸機, 261-303) describing a land "whose local customs are pure and admirable" (tu feng qing qie jia 土風清且嘉).

According to the author's preface, during breaks in his studies, he would visit local elders and discuss the customs and local conditions of the Wu 吳 region (around Suzhou). Whatever he observed or heard, he committed to writing, and after several years these notes accumulated into the present work. The book contains more than 240 entries. Arranged chronologically by month, it offers a detailed account of the seasonal festivals and folk customs of Jiangsu, centred on Suzhou Prefecture. Each month forms a separate juan. At the end of each entry, the author appends explanatory notes and textual investigations tracing the origins of the customs discussed. The work is an important source for the study of Chinese folklore and social customs.
