Chaoye leiyao 朝野類要 "Classified essentials from the court and popular realms", with a length of 5 juan, is a collection of stories compiled during the Song period 宋 (960-1279) by Zhao Sheng 趙昇 (fl. 1231), courtesy name Xiangchen 向晨, from Wenchang 文昌 (in today's Guangdong province).
The book compiles stories current in both court and society at the time, arranging them by category. It was completed in 1236. The contents are divided into twenty sections, speaking of court affairs, rituals, legal regulations, terms of administration, the examination system, medicine, divination, entering officialdom, appointment for official career, promotions and transfers, ranks and emoluments, official duties, laws and decrees, documents, government affairs, military affairs, demotions and pardons, retirement and leisure, hardship and misfortune, altogether covering 330 entries. Each entry is further given subheadings and detailed explanations.
The text serves as a valuable source for understanding Song-period institutions and regulations, bureaucratic documents and style, as well as idioms of official life.
