Shufa cuiyan 書法粹言 “Refined words on calligraphy” was written during the late Ming period 明 (1368-1644) by Wang Ting 汪挺, courtesy name Wushang 無上, style Ertao 爾陶, from Jiaxing 嘉興, Zhejiang. He was chief secretary in the Ministry of Revenue (hubu zhushi 户部主事) of the Prince of Fu 南明福王 (r. 1644-1645). Apart from the Shufa cuiyan, he also wrote the book Huicheng yigao 會城遺稿.
His book of 1 juan length consists entirely of excerpts from past masters' discussions on calligraphy, arranged in chronological order and compiled into a collection. Yu Shaosong 余紹宋 (1883-1949), in his Shuhua shulu jieti 書畫書錄解題, remarks that the excerpts are relatively brief, with many dubious compilations and an insufficiently careful selection process. The materials it draws from are primarily limited to Chen Si's Shuyuan jinghua 書苑精華. Therefore, this book should only be used with other references for comparison.
The text is found in the series Xuehai leibian 學海類編, Meishu congshu 美術叢書 and Congshu jicheng chubian 叢書集成初編.
