Yangzhou huayuan lu 揚州畫苑錄 "Records from pictorial garden in Yangzhou" is a book on paintings compiled during the late Qing period 清 (1644-1911) by Wang Yun 汪鋆 (b. 1816), courtesy name Yanshan 研山, from Yizheng 儀徵, Jiangsu. The book of 4 juan length was published in 1883. Wang also wrote the books Ershiyanzhai jinshi guoyan lu 十二硯齋金石過眼錄 and Chuncaotang suibi 春草堂隨筆.
This book is a collection of brief biographies of painters and calligraphers from the city of Yangzhou 揚州, Jiangsu, written by the author in imitation of the format of Yu Yi's 魚翼 (b. 1675) Haiyu huayuan lüe 海虞畫苑略. The accounts are primarily drawn from sources such as Yangzhou huafang lu 揚州畫舫錄, Tuhui baojian 圖繪寶鑒, Wusheng shishi 無聲詩史, and Huazhenglu 畫徵錄, and are mostly transcribed faithfully. For a few individuals not found in those texts, the author added entries based on his knowledge and experiences, clearly marked at the beginning with the phrase "Yun's supplementary note" (Yun an zhuo bu 鋆按拙補) to distinguish them.
Notably, the author focuses solely on the biographical details of the artists' lives and remains completely silent on the quality or technique of their artworks. The 490 painters included are not strictly arranged in chronological order.
The Yangzhou huayuan lu is purely a documentary catalogue; it contains no personal opinions or interpretations from the author.
