Xianchuang kuoyi zhi 閒窗括異志

Sep 14, 2013 © Ulrich Theobald

There are two books with the title Kuoyizhi 括異志 "Inclusive reports about strange matters", one written by Zhang Shizheng 張師正 (born 1016), and another one by Lu Yinglong 魯應龍 (fl. 1247). Both lived during the Song period 宋 (960-1279). Lu Yinglong's book is commonly titled Xianchuang kuoyi zhi 閒窗括異志 "Inclusive records of strange matters from the leisure window" to discern it from Zhang's Kuoyizhi. Both books are collections of fantastic stories.

Lu Yinglong 魯應龍 hailed from Jiaxing 嘉興 (modern Jiaxing, Zhejiang) and was a retainer of a certain Master Shen 沈氏.

His Kuoyizhi belongs to the old-style collections of ghost stories that were popular throughout the history of Chinese literature. It includes mainly stories of retributions of sins in an earlier life, the first part written by the author himself as a result of his own experience and hearsay. In contrast, the second part is a quotation of older stories, a lot of which are also to be found in other collections.

Lu's Xianchuang kuoyizhi is included in the series Guang baichuan xuehai 廣百川學海, Shuofu 說郛, Wuchao xiaoshuo 五朝小說 and Congshu jicheng chubian 叢書集成初編.
